Students from the Southwest Institute of Chinese Martial Arts, as well as American competitors from New York to California, a contingent of twenty from Brazil, a dozen from Israel, and many more from a multitude of other countries tested their skills in the Legends of Kung Fu World Championships this past weekend at the Plano Convention Center near Dallas, Texas.
Five competitors from the Lawton school participated and brought home 11 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Robert Jones dazzeled the judges with his spear form for the gold. He also captured silver with double hook swords and his long fist form. A solid routine with the broad sword rounded out his wins with a bronze medal.
Holly Stearns and Suny Stanfield won gold performing a two-person fighting routine using a 3-section staff vs. waxwood staff. Holly was awarded silver medals with her empty-hand form and fan form. Bronze came her way when she and Ken Ingram teamed up for another two person set—9-ring sword vs. staff.
In addition to the bronze, Ken Ingram won gold with his eagle claw form and the heavy, long weapon monk spade form; he also won a silver competing with a very complex empty-hand form called Er Lu Mai Fu (Second Road of Ambush).
In addition to the gold medal she won teaming with Holley Stearns, Suny Stanfield won gold with her Northern Shaolin long-fist form, steel-whip chain, double-end spear, and staff.
Corbin Stearns came away with first place in both an empty-hand Shaolin-style form and wushu staff form.
The medalists train with Kung Fu Master David Scott at the Southwest Institute of Chinese Martial Arts.
The event had a lot of competitors (over 800), was a lot of fun, and represented a lot of hard work from the competitors.
